The Philadelphia Union continues to solidify its reputation as one of Major League Soccer’s premier clubs for youth development. While Cavan Sullivan, the 15-year-old prodigy recently sold to Manchester City, is the club’s most high-profile talent, another rising star is emerging. Brazilian-American midfielder Willyam Ferreira has officially signed his first professional contract, making history in the process.
At just 15 years old, Willyam becomes the youngest Brazilian to sign with a top-tier U.S. club and one of the youngest players ever to secure a Major League Soccer (MLS) contract.
“This is a very special moment for me,” said Willyam. “I’m young, but I understand the significance of this achievement. I hope to repay this trust on the field. I’m really excited.”
A Dual Talent: U.S. and Brazilian Football Roots
Born in Brazil but also holding American citizenship, Willyam has already made a name for himself in the U.S. youth national team setup, wearing the coveted No. 10 shirt for the U-15 squad. Known for his technical ability and vision, he has been closely monitored by scouts from both South America and Europe.
His talent didn’t go unnoticed by Brazilian clubs, with Botafogo reportedly making an offer for the young midfielder. However, Philadelphia Union rejected the proposal, presenting him with a long-term development plan that solidified his commitment to the club.
A Key Prospect for Philadelphia Union II
Willyam is expected to feature prominently for Philadelphia Union II in MLS Next Pro, the league’s official development competition. His performances will be closely watched, as the club sees him as a potential future star.
Union II head coach Ryan Richter praised the teenager’s skill and mentality:
“Willyam has a great vision for the game and an impressive work ethic. He has already showcased tremendous potential at the academy level, and we are excited to continue guiding his development.”
Beyond the Pitch: A Well-Rounded Prospect
Willyam’s preparation extends beyond football. In addition to his natural talent, he is fluent in three languages, including Portuguese, and maintains a strong academic record—an aspect the club values in his development.
A Bright Future Ahead
While still not officially part of the first-team roster, Willyam acknowledges the importance of this milestone.
“Signing a professional contract at such a young age is a huge achievement, especially in a league as structured as MLS. He has everything to become one of the great talents of the next generation. Now, it’s about turning that potential into reality,” said Marcelo Norton, Willyam’s agent.
With Philadelphia Union’s proven track record in developing young stars, the Brazilian-American playmaker could soon follow in the footsteps of top talents who have used MLS as a springboard to Europe’s biggest leagues.
