CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy held Tigres UANL to a scoreless draw in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal, but the result came at a cost. The team now faces critical decisions as it prepares for the return leg in Monterrey.

Goalkeeper John McCarthy delivered a standout performance, making six saves to keep the Liga MX giants off the scoreboard despite the Galaxy being outshot 17-8. The defensive effort was key, but head coach Greg Vanney must now plan without captain Maya Yoshida, who left the match with a left hamstring injury before halftime.

Yoshida’s absence will be a major factor next week. The Japanese international has started every match this season and anchors the Galaxy’s back line. Vanney could turn to Erik Zavaleta or the Danish centerback Mathias Jørgensen as potential replacements, though neither will match Yoshida’s consistency or leadership.

Offensively, LA will need more in Monterrey. Forward Gabriel Pec and midfielder Marco Reus had limited space to operate against Tigres’ high press. The Galaxy have scored only twice in their last three matches across all competitions and will need to break that trend on Mexican soil.

With no away-goal rule in effect, a win in regulation or penalties is required to advance. The second leg is scheduled for April 10 at Estadio Universitario.
