Inter Miami — and the global football community — shared a moment of reverence this weekend with the official announcement of Sergio Busquets’ retirement. The 37-year-old Spanish midfielder confirmed he will retire at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season.

During Miami’s 4-1 win over the New England Revolution, the club honored Busquets with a fitting tribute: a video of his best moments, and a framed jersey presented alongside Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, his longtime teammates and partners in what has become a symbolically rich final chapter.

Although still in excellent physical shape, Busquets stated it was time to prioritize family and take a well-deserved break before deciding his next steps. Coaching? Maybe. But for now, the door remains open.

A Career Forged at Barcelona

Sergio Busquets is synonymous with loyalty and excellence. A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia, he debuted for the first team in 2008 under Pep Guardiola, quickly becoming the metronome of one of the greatest midfields in football history — alongside Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi.

In 15 seasons at Barça, he made over 700 appearances and lifted a staggering collection of trophies:

  • 9× La Liga
  • 7× Copa del Rey
  • 6× Spanish Super Cup
  • 3× UEFA Champions League
  • 3× FIFA Club World Cup
  • 3× UEFA Super Cup

More than stats, Busquets stood out for his elite reading of the game, positional intelligence, and ability to bring fluidity to possession through simple, decisive touches. He was a master of the essentials.

With Spain’s national team, he played a key role in their most dominant era — earning 143 caps and starting in the title runs of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA Euro.

Quiet off the pitch and commanding on it, Busquets embodied the very identity that brought Spanish football to its historic peak.

In 2023, Busquets took on a new challenge: joining Inter Miami’s star-studded rebuild alongside Messi and Alba. But he didn’t just play — he led.

His presence helped elevate the club from expansion hype to competitive relevance, contributing to its Leagues Cup and 2024 Supporters’ Shield titles. More than trophies, he helped shape a footballing culture — positioning Miami as both a sporting force and media powerhouse in the MLS era.

What’s Next for Busquets?

For now, the answer is rest. Busquets shared that he plans to spend time with his family and reflect before deciding what comes next. Earning his coaching license is on the table, but there’s no rush.

What’s clear is this: Sergio Busquets retires as one of the greatest midfielders of the modern era. He wasn’t the fastest. Or the flashiest. But perhaps, he was the smartest.

He turned simplicity into elegance — and in doing so, wrote his own chapter in football history.
