The transfer saga surrounding Rony, the Palmeiras forward, appears to have reached its conclusion. The player is set to join Atletico Mineiro on a three-year deal worth $3.1 million. The move, pending medical evaluation , marked the culmination of a protracted negotiation process involving multiple clubs expressing interest in acquiring Rony.

Palmeiras Remains Firm in Its Position Despite Vasco da Gama Interest

Rony had been available on the transfer market since the conclusion of the season, with Palmeiras seeking to reduce his $2 million annual salary. Fluminense was the initial club to make a serious offer, but Rony declined the move, prompting Palmeiras president Leila Pereira to withdraw the offer.

Interest from Liga MX clubs, such as Pachuca and Tigres, emerged but did not materialize as Rony prioritized remaining in Brazil. Negotiations with Atletico Mineiro progressed rapidly, leading to an agreement between the two clubs.

However, Vasco da Gama attempted to intervene by offering a higher salary. Reports indicate that Rony’s agent, Hercules Junior, signed with Vasco without informing Palmeiras, leading to speculation that Rony was considering a move to Rio de Janeiro.

Palmeiras Avoids Transfer Conflict and Honors Initial Agreement

The situation drew parallels to Palmeiras’ failed pursuit of Claudinho from Zenit, where a last-minute price increase derailed the transfer.

This time, Palmeiras opted not to engage in a bidding war, honoring its agreement with Atlético Mineiro. The club issued a firm stance—Rony would either move to Belo Horizonte or remain at Palmeiras, where his playing time had diminished.

With the player’s medical evaluation scheduled for yesterday, only final formalities remained before Rony officially joined Atlético Mineiro.

The forward will look to revitalize his career in Belo Horizonte, while Palmeiras moves forward with a leaner wage bill and a resolved transfer situation.
