Pochettino names US squad with focus on Europe and midfield changes

Mauricio Pochettino announced on Thursday the list of players called up for the United States national team for the October friendlies against Ecuador and Australia. The list features important changes in midfield and signals a possible outline of the team that will compete in the 2026 World Cup.

Under pressure due to inconsistent performances in recent FIFA dates, the Argentine coach chose to prioritize Athletes playing in Europe—in total, 15 of the 25 players called up play in Europe.

Still, this doesn't mean the end of the road for the youngsters tested in previous call-ups, especially from MLS. Names like Jack McGlynn (Philadelphia Union) and Sebastian Berhalter (Whitecaps), who had gained ground in recent months, were left out of this list but could return in the final tests of 2026.

The main changes are in the central sector. Aidan Morris, Tanner Tessmann, and James Sands are once again gaining ground, while Johnny Cardoso (injured) and Tyler Adams—almost certain to be in the 2026 squad—were rested this time. The competition for midfield spots is increasingly fierce. In addition to Morris and Sands, Musah and the McGlynn mentioned above remain on the radar.

The call-up reinforces Pochettino's experimental approach in the current cycle. With the debut against high-level teams scheduled only for next year, Pochettino continues to use 2025 to test variations, solidify his players, and build a solid foundation for the tournament to be played on American soil. Up ahead, however, are two opponents that should test the strength and aptitude of the US National Team.

The United States takes the field next Friday (8) to face Ecuador in the first friendly of October. Kick-off is at 9:30 pm (Brasília time) at Q2 Stadium in Texas. After that, Poche's team will face Australia on the 14th at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids.
