After 31 points in 34 games, 21 losses, and one of the worst defensive campaigns in Major League Soccer history, the New England Revolution approached the Transfer Window aggressively and, at least for now, has completed the biggest rebuild in its history.

New England Revolution’s Aggressive Approach to the Transfer Window

Over a two-month period, 14 players were signed, seven of whom came from outside the country. The team has changed leadership and now operates under Technical Director Curt Onalfo, one of the key figures behind Bruce Arena's removal as Head Coach in 2023.

Key Signings: From International Talent to Established Stars

The club took an aggressive approach in the market, targeting young talents from abroad and relying heavily on trust in its scouting group. Many of these players haven't seen significant playing time recently, such as center-back Brayan Ceballos, who joined from Fortaleza after playing only 178 minutes on loan at Dynamo Kyiv, or the Argentine forward Maxi Urruti, who played just 210 minutes for Club Atlético Platense in Argentina before becoming a free agent in the market.

Unlike the previously mentioned signings, Onalfo targeted a more established center-back within his team and country. The club signed 27-year-old Mali national team defender Mamadou Fofana from Amiens SC in France, where he had already made over 100 appearances for the club and over 40 appearances for the country. Fofana arrives as a projected starter and the cornerstone of a defense that conceded the most goals in the league last season.

A Blockbuster Trade and Fresh Hope for the Offense in 2025

The Revs had the second-highest amount of General Allocation Money (GAM) in the league. They took advantage of it by acquiring even more through multiple player trades, including midfielder Ian Harkes, right-back Nick Lima, and Designated Player Giacomo Vrioni. They also sold their young star, Esmir Bajraktarević, to PSV in the Netherlands.

With that money, the team pulled off a blockbuster trade, sending $2,500,000 in GAM plus an International Roster Spot to Inter Miami CF in exchange for 24-year-old Ecuadorian forward Leonardo Campana. Hailed as the team's hope for goals after one of the worst offensive performances in the league, Leo was a backup to Luis Suárez in 2024, but still managed to score eight goals and provide two assists in 35 games.

Opposite to Giacomo, he delivered in key moments, including a game-winning goal against Toronto FC in the penultimate round of the regular season, which helped Inter Miami set up a record-breaking point chase against New England in the final week.
