MLS Week 2: New York Red Bulls x Nashville SC Recap

The Eastern conference champs get redemption and first win of the year after blowing up Nashville at home.

Mohammed Sofo celebrates his first MLS goal for the Red Bulls

Not even the freezing night in New Jersey dampened the spirits of the 18,843 fans who packed the Sports Illustrated Stadium this Saturday (1st) and left happy after the New York Red Bulls defeated Nashville SC 2-0 in a Matchday 2 clash of the MLS.

Mohammed Sofo and Emil Forsberg scored the goals that secured New York’s first win of the season, moving them up to fourth place in the Eastern Conference with three points.

Nashville, now 14th in the East with one point, remains winless this season, with one draw, one loss, and no goals scored.

Celebration Before Kickoff

The 2024 Eastern Conference title is now permanently marked at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Before the match, the Red Bulls highlighted their achievement in the Trophy Hall, where it now sits alongside the club’s three Supporters’ Shield titles.

Unexpected Absence

New York’s head coach Sandro Schwarz made a lineup change for the game against Nashville compared to the squad that started the MLS season opener against FC Cincinnati. After picking up an injury in Friday’s (28) training session, forward Lewis Morgan was replaced by homegrown player Mohammed Sofo.

And it was Sofo who opened the scoring for the Red Bulls just seven minutes into the first half after capitalizing on a rebound from Éric Choupo-Moting. The German striker struck the ball inside the box, but his shot hit Joe Willis’ post. Positioned perfectly, Sofo only had to tap it into the net.

Emil Forsberg Makes the Difference

Twenty-three minutes after the opener, New York doubled their lead with a stunning goal.

The Red Bulls captain received a pass from Omar Valencia near the edge of Nashville’s box, adjusted his body, and curled a shot into Willis’ left corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

The goal marked Emil Forsberg’s 10th for the New York Red Bulls.

Carlos Coronel Secures Another Clean Sheet

Largely untested throughout the match, New York Red Bulls’ Paraguayan goalkeeper made a crucial save in the 86th minute, palming away a powerful shot from Nashville forward Sam Surridge inside the box.

Harper Injured

Used as a right wingback, attacking midfielder Cam Harper was substituted at halftime for Dylan Nealis. Harper’s physical condition is a concern, as he was seen using crutches and is unlikely to be available for the Red Bulls’ upcoming matches.

What’s Next for the Red Bulls and Nashville?

Both teams return to action next Saturday (8th). The New York Red Bulls will travel to Georgia to face Atlanta United at 7:30 PM.

Nashville will host the Portland Timbers at GEODIS Park.
