Manchester United Shows Interest in USMNT’s Johnny Cardoso

Manchester United is reportedly monitoring Johnny Cardoso, the rising midfielder from the U.S. Men’s National Team.

Johnny Cardoso, born of Brazilian parents, has so far defied the odds to carve a notable path in soccer, now representing the United States Men's National Team (USMNT) and excelling at the club level. His professional journey began however in Brazil, with Internacional, where he debuted in 2019 at age 17, quickly becoming a regular starter in Série A and earning his first USMNT call-up in November 2020. Cardoso debuted for the USMNT against Wales and Panama, showcasing his physical style as a defensive midfielder.

He played a key role in the USMNT’s 2023 Concacaf Nations League title defense and was part of the U-23 Olympic qualifying squad, though the team failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. Despite missing the 2022 World Cup roster, Cardoso’s consistent performances have made him a regular under coaches Gregg Berhalter and Mauricio Pochettino, amassing 18 caps by 2025.At the club level, Cardoso’s move to Real Betis in La Liga in January 2024 for €6 million marked a significant step.

He adapted swiftly, becoming a fixture in Betis’ midfield under Manuel Pellegrini, with standout stats among La Liga defensive midfielders: top-six in tackle percentage (52.3%), duel percentage (62.7%), and aerial percentage (66.0%). His performances earned a nomination for La Liga’s young player of the season and attracted interest from clubs like Tottenham, AC Milan, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Cardoso’s contract, extended to 2030, reflects his value, with a reported €80 million release clause.
