LAFC has officially signed Brazilian midfielder Igor Jesus from Portuguese side Estrela Amadora, the club announced Tuesday. The 21-year-old joins the Black & Gold on a contract through 2028 and will occupy a U22 Initiative and international roster slot.

Who Is Igor Jesus?

Igor Jesus began his career at Flamengo, one of Brazil’s most storied clubs, where he won two trophies before moving to Portugal. However, during his time with Flamengo and Estrela Amadora, Jesus made only 47 professional appearances, so the player comes in as a big promise to fill the gap left in midfield by the departures of Eduard Atuesta (Palmeiras / BRA) and Lewis O'Brien (Nottingham Forest / ENG).

Both midfielders were in LA on loans and are now back with their clubs in Brazil and the UK. The club also lost veteran Ilie Sanchez to Austin FC, which are loading up their squad after a tough season, reeling in from some pretty bad hires. With the trio leaving, it opens a lot of space for the versatile Brazilian to make an immediate impact on the field for the Black and Gold.

Strengths and Playing Style

Known for his versatility, Jesus can play as a central midfielder (CM) or in a more defensive role. His style emphasizes pace, stamina, and defensive contributions, making him a balanced presence in the midfield. At 179 cm (5'10") and 79 kg (174 lbs), he brings both physicality and athleticism to LAFC’s midfield, a much needed trait in among the Los Angeles midfield core of Tillman, Odin Holm and David Martinez.

Jesus excels in areas such as:

  • Pace and athleticism: He’s quick and agile, allowing him to transition effectively between attack and defense.
  • Tackling and interceptions: His defensive attributes make him a reliable player in breaking up opposition plays.
  • Passing and dribbling: He’s creative and able to link up well with teammates in advanced positions. His long ball is singular.

Areas for Improvement

Despite his skill set, Jesus has room for growth in:

  • Finishing and long shots: These areas have not been standout features of his game thus far, especially of a player who tends to complement the midfield defensively.
  • Weak foot: His reliance on his stronger right foot limits some aspects of his versatility, according to some scouting reports.

What Does He Bring to LAFC?

Igor Jesus is a promising young talent who fits LAFC's strategy of developing players through the U22 Initiative. He comes at the expense of another young player, Omar Campos, who LAFC dealt back to Liga MX this offseason. In MLS, versatility is a major trait and Igor's ability to operate across multiple roles in midfield, combined with his stamina and tactical awareness, makes him a valuable addition to the roster.

Comparisons have been drawn between Igor Jesus and players like:

  • Moises Caicedo: For his energy and defensive contributions.
  • João Gomes: A similar style as a Flamengo graduate who excels in ball-winning roles.
  • Oscar Zambrano: For his versatility and work ethic.

Comparisons aside, LAFC fans can expect to see Igor Jesus grow into an integral part of the squad as he adapts to Major League Soccer. With his contract extending through 2028, he has the potential to become a key figure in LAFC's midfield, perhaps for years to come.

Clarification

Igor Jesus should not be confused with Igor Jesus Maciel da Cruz, the Brazilian striker who played for the Brazil national team and on the way to Arsenal.
