Internacional are close to securing a new defensive reinforcement for the 2026 season. The Brazilian club has reached an agreement in principle with center back Matheus Dória, 31, currently under contract with Atlas FC.
According to an exclusive report by Pitchside US journalist Lucas Collar, Internacional was waiting to finalize the sale of Vitão to Flamengo before advancing talks for Dória — a deal completed last Sunday (28). With Vitão’s departure underway, Internacional moved quickly and agreed to salary terms with the defender.
The final step remains the termination of Dória’s contract with Atlas, which was initially set to run until mid-2027. Negotiations between the player and the Mexican club are nearing completion.
Move Follows Failed Return to Santos
Dória nearly returned to Brazilian football in September, when he was close to signing with Santos FC. The deal appeared to be progressing before Santos shifted focus to other defensive targets, ultimately shelving the move.
With that transfer falling through — and no longer part of Atlas’ long-term plans — Dória remained in Mexico through the Apertura tournament while awaiting a new opportunity.
A Career Marked by Highs and Lows in Liga MX
Dória has spent the majority of his career in Mexican football. He arrived in Liga MX in 2018 after signing with Santos Laguna, where he quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the defense.
Over approximately six seasons with Santos Laguna, Dória made around 189 appearances, scored 15 goals, and became a consistent presence in both Apertura and Clausura campaigns. His performances earned league-wide recognition, including the Liga MX Balón de Oro award for Best Defender in the 2020–21 season.
In July 2024, Dória joined Atlas FC on a permanent transfer, signing a three-year contract with the Guadalajara-based club. He immediately stepped into the starting lineup, bringing leadership and experience to the “Rojinegros” back line.
One of his most notable moments with Atlas came in March 2025, when he scored a rare scorpion-kick goal against Tijuana — a highlight that showcased his threat on set pieces in addition to his defensive reliability.
Despite mixed team results, Dória remained one of Atlas’ most consistent performers, serving as a reference point in defense and maintaining regular minutes throughout Liga MX competition.
What SC Internacional Is Getting
If finalized, Internacional will add a seasoned defender with extensive experience in a highly competitive league. Dória brings physical presence, aerial strength, and leadership — qualities that could prove valuable as the club reshapes its defensive unit ahead of 2026.
The deal is expected to be completed once Atlas formally releases the player, clearing the path for his return to Brazilian football.
