Club America fans protested against Brazilian Coach André Jardine after the team fell to Nashville in Mexico City, finishing its participation in the Concacaf Champions Cup. The elimination comes days after the 1-1 draw with Cruz Azul on Sunday (12). The Mexican team squandered their 1-0 lead and suffered the equalizing goal from Omar Campos in the 48th minute of the second half, just minutes before the last whistle.
America now occupies seventh place in Liga MX, with 19 points, within the playoff qualification zone but far from the top. However, the situation is delicate with three rounds remaining in the Clausura.
Atlas and León, both with 19 points, threaten America's spot. León is in ninth place, just outside the qualification zone.
Jardine's Future Under Analysis
Santiago Baños publicly expresses support for the Brazilian coach in interviews. However, the board will evaluate the results at the end of the tournament.
Jardine's contract runs until 2028. His stay depended on the Concacaf Champions League and Liga MX playoff campaigns. The first is already out of contention, as Nashville became the first MLS team to ever win at Azteca, a feat no other American team had managed before. The second will be the ultimate test for Jardine's job. Anything short of a deep run could end the coach's tenure after several years and championships.
Miguel Herrera emerges as the main candidate to replace the Brazilian. The former Club America coach is currently a free agent and works as a commentator on TUDN.
Juan Carlos Osorio and Robert Dante Siboldi also appear among the possible substitutes. All three are familiar with Liga MX.
