Tiago Coimbra, a Brazilian forward now representing Canada internationally, is set to make the leap from the Canadian Premier League (CPL) to Europe. The Halifax Wanderers confirmed they have agreed to terms with Swedish top-tier club IFK Göteborg for the 22-year-old attacker.
Coimbra has been one of the most exciting talents in the CPL, scoring 13 goals and adding three assists in 23 appearances during the 2025 season. His stellar performances earned him the CPL Under-21 Player of the Year awardand a nomination for the Players’ Player of the Year.
Earlier this year, Coimbra was called up to the Canadian men’s national team for the January camp in California, making his international debut in a 1-0 friendly win over Guatemala.
Despite interest from clubs across North America and Europe, Coimbra opted to decline offers from MLS sides Houston Dynamo and Vancouver Whitecaps, choosing a move to IFK Göteborg instead. The transfer fee has not been disclosed, but Halifax is expected to receive a significant sum.
Coimbra joined Halifax in December 2022 on a two-year deal with an option for 2025, later extending his contract through the 2026 CPL campaign, with additional options for 2027 and 2028. Over three seasons, he accumulated 64 appearances, 20 goals, and 5 assists for the Nova Scotia club.
With Coimbra’s departure imminent, the Halifax Wanderers are looking to strengthen their squad for the 2026 CPL season. The club recently signed goalkeeper Marco Carducci, defender Finn Linder, and midfielders Lucas Olguin and Miguel Arilla, while losing players such as Sean Rea to FC Supra du Québec and Rayane Yesli to Algeria’s top division.
The 2026 season marks the start of coach Vanni Sartini’s tenure in Halifax, with the team aiming for its first CPL championship. The Wanderers will open their campaign with a preliminary round against Forge FC in Hamilton.
