The BMO Field in Toronto has undergone significant upgrades as part of preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026, reinforcing Canada’s role as a host nation for the global tournament.
The stadium, home to Toronto FC, is the smallest among the 16 venues selected across Canada, the United States and Mexico. To meet FIFA requirements, capacity is being expanded from approximately 28,000 to about 45,000 seats through the installation of temporary stands.
Organizers say the additional seating structures comply with international safety standards, despite public concerns raised earlier in the preparation phase after images of the installations circulated online. Officials emphasized that the structures are being delivered in partnership with experienced global providers and will undergo comprehensive testing during major events ahead of the tournament.
Toronto is scheduled to host six matches during the World Cup, with the city positioning itself as a central hub for the competition in Canada. The venue has already received multiple inspections and approval from FIFA, according to local organizing officials.
Beyond seating capacity, attention has also been given to the playing surface, with organizers expressing confidence that the pitch will meet elite international standards required for the tournament.
