Chelsea have completed the signing of U.S. international Alyssa Thompson from Angel City, in a transfer that is being described as historic for women’s football.

The 19-year-old forward, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft and quickly became a hometown star in Los Angeles, joins the WSL champions for a reported fee of £1.1 million, potentially rising further with add-ons.

Angel City acknowledged the significance of losing such a cornerstone player, praising Thompson’s contribution to the club while emphasizing their role in shaping the next stage of her career.

For Chelsea, Sonia Bompastor confirmed that the registration and medical clearance process has been completed, ensuring Thompson is eligible for selection in the coming weeks.

The forward is expected to bring pace, directness, and creativity to Chelsea’s frontline, which has already been reshaped after key departures. The move sends a clear message: the NWSL is now exporting talent at prices once unthinkable, while the USWNT pipeline is gaining fresh exposure to European football at its highest level.

For Chelsea, this is both an investment in immediate quality and a nod to long-term dominance on the continental stage. Alyssa leaves behind a lackluster time in LA, but not because of her form but more about her team's inability to rally around her.
