Santos FC continues its squad overhaul with the addition of Álvaro Barreal, the dynamic Argentine winger arriving on loan from FC Cincinnati. The deal, confirmed by both clubs, runs through December 2025 and includes a purchase obligation if Barreal meets specific performance benchmarks.

At 23, Barreal has already built a solid resume. He joined FC Cincinnati in 2020 and quickly became a fan favorite, amassing 121 appearances, 19 goals, and 29 assists across four seasons. His ability to create scoring opportunities from wide areas earned him an MLS All-Star nod, and his versatility as both a winger and wingback made him a valuable asset.

Barreal spent the 2024 season on loan at Cruzeiro, gaining experience in the Brazilian top flight. Now, he joins a Santos squad in transition, aiming to reclaim its historical status among Brazil’s elite clubs. His arrival adds creativity and attacking depth to the Peixe, who are looking for more firepower after a challenging period.

FC Cincinnati, meanwhile, has extended Barreal’s contract through the 2026 MLS season, ensuring they maintain control of his future should he return stateside. However, the inclusion of a purchase obligation suggests Santos sees the Argentine as a long-term piece of their project.

For Santos, Barreal is one more piece, after landing Neymar in the offseason. If he adapts quickly, his speed and playmaking ability could make him a key figure at Vila Belmiro, especially with a dynamic player like Neymar by his side. For the Brazilian, Barreal is a great upgrade, someone who can help Santos regain mcup needed relevancy, once again.
